Today was a monumental day in the history of Cybersecurity – Last year President Obama brought cybersecurity to the forefront of national security issues.

In March of this year, Secretary Napolitano laid out a challenge for individuals, business and organizations to pick up and share ideas on how we can work together to raise awareness on cybersecurity matters, while helping define new ways in which we can address them. In one of our nation’s historic moments, like the challenge for the moon walk by President Kennedy – America responded.

In fact, the DHS received hundreds of submissions from around the country from groups and individuals, outlining their plans for a safer world in cyberspace.

After combing through the stack of submissions, today the Department of Homeland Security announced the winners of the National Cybersecurity Awareness Challenge – at the White House.

The DHS handed out seven awards to organizations, business and one individual who dared to dream and put forth their ideas to help all Americans tackle the issue of cybercrime – today and into the future.

The journey to get to this point was beyond exciting – it was and continues to be exhilarating! With 200 stakeholders representing all segments of the greater San Diego community we are well on our way to achieving our mission of “making San Diego a place where we can all live, work and play in a cybersecure city.”

Also in attendance: President Obama, who showed his appreciation for public private partnership:

…the business, national and civilian sectors [are] all working in concert which can only be done by coordinating mechanisms that have already been set up and our willingness to participate.

I am very grateful to you for that.

The President also laid out the successes we’ve had to date, including bolstering federal networks, creating a unified response to future cyber incidents, making historic investments in research including broadband, a smart grid, and electronic health records. And of course, “strengthening public/private partnerships both cooperatively on the domestic as well as the international side. That is evidenced by your presence here today.”

As Secretary Napolitano shared, Cyberspace and its protection is one of the five  priorities that the Department of Homeland Security will focus on now and into the foreseeable future. Surrounded by dignitaries and leaders of our nation, it was inspiring to see that small groups of people with big ideas can and do have a profound effect on our nation.
